In 1869 the 35-year old chemist Dmitrii I. Mendeleyev published his periodic table of the elements, one of the most profound examples of scientific clarity. This highly architectural model, which left spaces for yet undiscovered elements, laid the foundation for a huge amount of productive research in the decades that followed. Even though new and advanced models have since been suggested, the periodic table has a timeless quality. Inspired by the qualities of the periodic table, this design orders the programmatic content of the new EPO building in a framework that enhances the identity of each element and at the same time demonstrates its parity with the others.
