The houseboat, which resembles that of a submarine, is located in the 16th-century center of Amsterdam between the monumental mansions of the Prinsengracht. Local regulations require all new houseboats to have a maritime character. A simple barge was taken as the starting point for the design of this house.
On top of the barge a series of curved steel beams was constructed. Over the top of these beams a 4mm thick steel skin was welded, with a coat of paint to finish the outside and with insulation and stucco to finish the inside. The curved shape of the room provides perfect acoustic conditions for the classical music of the professional musician who lives there.
